554 Fillmore

2018

Built at the end of the 19th century, the Sacred Heart Church was decommissioned and sold to a private developer at the turn of the 21st century.  It is one of the largest unreinforced masonry buildings in San Francisco, and must be seismically strengthened in conjunction with any adaptive re-use proposal.  The city is in dire need of housing, so a design that addresses both of these demands is ideal.

We have proposed insertion of three new floors in the former church nave for residential use.  The floors will act as structural diaphragms tied to internal concrete shear walls.  Minimal changes will be necessary to the outside of the building, and internal historic fabric will be preserved.
